Red Alert: Problem at the Carnival!

Hi everyone. I've been asked to spread the word about another visual-only CAPTCHA. This one is at http://www.blogcarnival.com, and several people within the blindness community have emailed the support team asking them to please make the CAPTCHA accessible. I am going to send an email and give BlogCarnival a piece of my mind momentarily, but I am asking all readers of these pages to please do likewise. Send those requests to support@blogcarnival.com. A big thank you goes out to Darrell Shandrow at http://www.blindaccessjournal.com for drawing attention to this and many other CAPTCHA issues. I suppose it's no coincidence that one of the major topics on Blog Carnival is disability-related?

Another Job, Maybe!

Hey all. I have some good news to share, but before we get to it all I must say that this Chicagoland weather sucks bigtime! I mean come onn already! It's the middle of May and it's still almost to the freezing point. Or at least I think it is. It has also been very windy. Like I said before, I think spring or at least summer is on its way but I'm not too sure. I have picked up a cold, and I think this lousy weather just might be why. Anyway...Now to the good news. Earlier this week I was interviewed for what will hopefully turn into a jjob for me. Nope, I ain't quittin my other jobs, at least not for awhile yet. Who knows though, maybe I'll do something to get fired from one or both of them. Like show up to work naked as a jaybird. Actually, if I do this for the job where I telecommute it'll be absolutely fine because nobody will know. Well perhaps my computer will know. Then again maybe not. Details of the job are as follows. There's a restaurant not too far from my apartment building, and an internship position became available for someone to roll silverware. In other words, when restaurant patrons sit down at their tables and contemplate ordering a meal or whatever, I would be the person responsible for arranging the silverware properly in the napkins and then making them into a neat roll. That is, I would be responsible for carrying out this task should I choose to accept this position. I had the interview and it went very well, and I am currently trying out the position for a little while to see if I like it. This is actually an internship through Center for Independent Futures. I don't quite know all the details but I soon will. What I do know is that I'm entitled to job coaching from CIF. I also hope to get at the very least one free meal out of this. I've dined at the restaurant in question, and every experience was a most pleasant one. I can walk there and back, or at least for the most part I can. There are two streets to cross, one of which is a busy street. But I cannot do that myself for obvious reasons. So that was something good this week. I'll probably stay indoors this weekend and get rid of this darned cold. The last thing I want to do is make the restaurant employees sick. I do have to go out for a brief period tomorrow but that's only downstairs to a meeting of our men's group.

Accessible Paper Currency Comes to a Bank Near You!

Hi everyone! First off, let me take this opportunity to wish you all a happy hump day. I don't know why, but that phrase "Hump Day" has always amused me. I heard somewhere that its origin is sexual if you know what I mean, but I don't know how true that is. That having been said let's get on with things! The big news is...virtual drum-roll please......The US Court has found the Dept. of Treasury guilty, yes guilty, of discriminating against people with a visual challenge by refusing to provide paper money that is accessible by touch. I was honestly a bit skeptical at first when JAWS read me the subject line of my brother's forwarded email message yesterday. What's more, I have been unable for some time to open links that are emailed to me. But just as I thought would happen, this good news was widespread online already. Folks, this is admittedly a huge victory but we do still have a ways to go. We'll probably have to deal with appeals of sorts from various corners, and there's that one blindness "advocacy" group who claim to speak for all blind people. I am of course referring to the National Federation of the Blind. I don't know if they have the power to appeal anything, but they will probably manage somehow to get their voice heard in staunch opposition, once again! At this point I'd like to thank the membership and leadership of the American Council of the Blind, the American Foundation for the Blind under the leadership of Carl Augusto, and others who helped in spreading the word about this important decision. Yet I myself still remain rather skeptical about joining ACB. But what I will say is that this good news will play a big part in my decision, if it hasn't already. Dr. Kenneth Jernigan, Russell Kletzing, and all those Federationists who came before are probably rolling in their graves right now. I honestly wish I could do a podcast about this, but I don't have that kind of ability right now. I do however, wish to do one someday soon. Anyway...That's it for today's entry from me. So to all of you, good night and good luck.
